JOHN ROBINSON IN IDA -9/23
From unknown:
SUBJECT: Sat. Sept. 16, 2006 was the Mich.-Ohio Kountry Kickers annual fall workshop in Ida, Mich. This year
they had the very entertaining John Robinson. The local instructors were Carole Daugherty, Lynn Reiss and Jean Rowe. Due to
the fog the attendees were a little slow to arrive, by lunch time though the floor was packed. John started off the day
teaching an easy dance Don't Steer Me Wrong-Christy Fox. The music is one of those playful country type songs. There
are times in the dance that the movements match what the voice is saying. Next John taught Jo' Thompson's dance I See,I See!
This is a nice easy dance for upper beginners to low intermediates. This dance goes to an old Bobby Darin song I'm Beginning
to See the Light. Then John taught his own dance Cold Hard Cash-this dance has 3 restarts that are not hard. Lutricia McNeals
song Money is a west coast type song. Lynn Reiss then taught Papa Loves Mambo. This dance is a MIL dance that
is phrased. The music is Papa Loves Mambo by Perry Como. Then it was time for lunch. We were provided a selection
of breads and meats to make sandwiches, and fixings for a salad, potato chips and beverage . Last but not least were some
homemade desserts-YUMMY! When are bellies were full Carol Daugherty wanted us to hop on board and Start a Love
Train-Max Perry. The song is a nice remake of the O'Jays Love Train. John then did a demo of Mr. Pinstripe,
Now That I Know and Super Good. After some discussion it was decided that because several people already knew Mr. Pinstripe
that John would teach Now That I Know-Debbie Diachuk and Super Good Times-Dan Albro and John. Jean Rowe then
taught Mark Cosenza's dance Wakiki Cowboy. This is a phrased dance and with that name of course a Hawaiian flavor. By
request then John taught his dance Batter Up to the Trace Adkins song Swing. After this the workshop ended. After a couple
hours break for supper there was a review session for the dances taught during the day. Later in the evening John taught a
fun, silly dance Bean Town Boogie. If you want to feel silly and stupid but see smiles on peoples faces try this dance. I
liked having the different levels of dances. I also enjoyed all the different types of music for the dances. Merle Shock,
the DJ, kept the floor going during the breaks with a nice selection of music (mostly requests). Thanks to Merle, Sally,
John, Carol, Jean, Lynn and the Kountry Kickers for all there work to give us this workshop. *********************
SUBJECT: Kickin' w/John Robinson at Kountry Kickers, Ida, Michigan FROM:
Sally WOW!!! For the first time the Kountry Kickers decided to have a professional (not that local instructors are not
professional) and we were lucky enough to be able to have scheduled a weekend when John was available. As the co-ordinator
I was very nervous, having convinced the club members this was the way to go, I needed to make this work. Nervous up to the
minute John walked into the hall and then all of a sudden Mr. Showcase made everything work!!!!! We had many people who had
never been to a workshop before and many who had never danced with John. Don't think it could have gotten any better. He taught
for all levels, entertained as he instructed, made everyone feel comfortable and made the day totally enjoyable. Then after
a brief rest he returned for the dance, reviewed the dances he taught, and again was so entertaining those who did not attend
the workshop thoroughly enjoyed watching him. Then if we could have asked for anything more we convinced him to do a demo
of Dangerous. As I watched the crowd (yes, I took my eyes of John for brief moments) everyone was thoroughly enjoying and
impressed with the demonstation. THANKS JOHN!!!! Not forgetting Carolle Daugherty, Lynn Reiss and Jean Rowe, local
instructors who have helped support our club numberous time before, who came and taught their current favorite dance. Thanks!!
The dances that were taught were reviewed in the Newletter a few days ago so I won't repeat that. However I was told numerous
times that the dancers liked each and every dance that was taught. Thanks John, Carole, Lynn & Jean for an excellent
selection. And thanks to all the attendees who came and danced and help support our club. Sally Shockscntrytime@aol.com
Ida Kountry Kickers John Robinson Workshop 9/16/06
Thanks
to Sally, Merle, the members of the Kountry Kickers, along with Mother Nature who treated us all to a lovely fall day of dancing
in southern Michigan.
The event was well attended by several area instructors and their crews, thanks for coming out!
By doing so, ya'll give us more chances to dance in the future!
Dances done from memory...
John's own choreography:
Cold Hard Cash - Well liked & doable for most int mainstreamers - tags n all ;) Windy - check
Batter
Up! - MICHIGAN JUST LOVES IT - Go Tigers! Beginner dance with plenty of room to keep from getting bored. This has gone
QUITE well within the bar scene - with tags even! Windy - check
Other choreography John taught I See, I See Thompson -
Cute lil dance that flows well and has new patterns while still holding the beginner-ish level. Music is more of the swingy, loungy,
croonery variety. We were due for another one of those in the playlist rotation round about now anyway ;) Windy - Check
Don't
Steer Me Wrong - Fox - My FAV of the day! Hilarious hokey country-like sound (just like I like em) one of those
infectious sing along thangs. It has a dance to match its uniqueness. A fun combination of do-able step patterns plus a few
new twists on basics. You won't get that samo samo feeling with this one. Windy - ?
Now That I know; Diachuk
- Disco-ish sound and look mixed reactions, people either loved it, or didn't. Windy - ?
Beantown Boogie -
Willis - I THINK it's the Benny Hill theme song, the dance was certainly a match for that theme. This isn't one we'll
want to over-do, but it was fun in contra for getting the evening started. I'll join in if the occasion rises again ;)
Dances
taught by other instructors:
Jean Rowe - Waikiki Cowboy - M Cosenza - Went well with dancers, my gang
especially liked the NUTZ bit, or our own variations thereof! AND one more chance to open dance at Windy - Check.
Lynn
Reiss - Papa Loves Mambo - MIL - This also went over well with the crowd, nostalgia music factor for many I
suspect. Very doable for most, some of us had trouble flowing from certain 8s to the next in part B, but nothing unmanageable,
just remember to alter your prep - maybe another off the Windy List??? Rachel's aren't posted yet.
Carole Daugherty -
Start A Love Train - Max Perry - I obviously like it plus it's a FUN teach. Watchin' folks go every which-a-way
is SOMETIMES good for the instructor :) It's only short term confusion, everyone gets movin' in the right direction
after a few go'rounds. Thought Max would be teaching it at Windy - see he's got all brand new ones on the schedule; but I
think we can scratch another off the know before we go List.
How nice! It looks like ALL the instructors had the idea
to teach dances that would be popular with the folks at Ida, as well as give the travelers a jump on some of the more recent
dances that are sure to be on the floors at Windy City. GMTA!
So - those were the dances, now more high-lites
from the day!
Folks liked the change in the ample luncheon, simple country fare, all fresh and tasty delish!
Plenty
of room on the WOOD floor - a perk as always!
Cool temps - THAT was nice - for me especially!
A
solid mixing of the "something for everyone" for break songs & the evening playlist. Some true beginner, some classics,
some diehard. A lil of everything ranging from Bartender's Stomp, to Dizzy, to Break Free Cha. Thanks Merle!
A night
time surprise was having Dawn Beecham (Got To Be Funky) who is retired from dance join us. It's always neat to dance with
the choreographer! We also had some laughs with Bucklehuck. John and I did a version of Cmon, Cmon to Beep Beep, which I think
no one else musta recognized with all the variations ;) Shooot! We shoulda Neverdance! Save it for Windy!!! He
also did a solo performance of Dangerous he's gotten quite good at that one eh?!?!
John, naturally was loved
by everyone and made an honorary Kountry Kicker. He is always at the top of his game, and one of the few Big Gun circuit personalities
that can draw from both ends of the dance spectrum - and everyone in between. No comment on the monkeys n misfits or otherwise
;)
Watch for more Kicker Workshops and John to return to Michigan in the future. Thanks to Sally for having me out,
much appreciated! Let's all do it again next year! They usually hold spring and fall day workshops. Visit http://kountrykickers.2itb.com

John Robinson Packs Whiskeys!
Thanks to John for stoppin' off on his way to the Great Big Party event in Toronto. John had lots of fun playing with
ya'll, stayed and danced till after midnight, and can't wait to come back to see yas again! Thanks to everyone that joined
us for the night!
Local reponse was great, which took the Whiskeys floor to beyond capacity, just like John's dance - we got a lil "Hot
& Sweaty" ;) with attendance nearly doubling expectation.
Cheers to everyone for hangin in and making the best of it - dancers do know how to enjoy themselves!
Special thanks to both dancers & instructors who traveled, brought groups, and helped spread the word - from Michigan
and beyond.
John shared 2 new dances with us, both were well very received.
Batter Up! to Trace Adkins' latest "Swing", a high beginner dance with easily heard restarts, should be doable
in bars/clubs cuz everyone one got 'em without being cued by the 2nd time thru the music - great summer song too!
Bored to Tears - to Bored to Tears(remix) by Double Z
A solid intermediate, "never taught before" dance that John premiered just for us! This got a thumbs up from
everyone I spoke with too.
(I'll be re-teaching both dances in Wed & Thurs classes this week.)
Thanks to Bob and Whiskeys staff for having us out - oh and the chocolate fountain! Another lil tease of the GBP!
Kountry Kickers
– We Have The Hall – Line Dance Workshop, Ida Michigan
11.19.05
Thanks to Sally
& Merle Shock and the Kountry Kickers for hosting a line dance workshop this past Saturday. The premise was, they had the hall – might as well put it to good use – even on short notice. Thanks to everyone that came to dance and have fun!
Sally quickly
organized an inexpensive, no fuss - no muss, workshop that worked out great!
The lessons ran
from 1:00
-5:00, no pre-registration was required, and cost for the day was only $5.00! Step
sheets were available to make your own packets. We got in LOTS of dancing
all afternoon, with 2 song breaks in between the flex-time lesson slots. There was a evening dance after an on your
own dinner break at night too.
Instructors supplied
a list of choices from popular dances that covered a mixed variety of levels & music, then a “potential” tote
board of possible teaches was compiled from there. Upon arrival, attendees cast
their votes for what they wanted to learn that day. Naturally, some folks already knew some of the dances, but
no one knew them all, which made for a day that wasn’t totally overwhelming.
Also, this was a perfect way to catch a few of the recent workshop hits that you reading so much about, plus a chance
to just dance the new stuff!
The dances with
the most “teach” votes, and fewest marked “already known” were taught by the following instructors:
Sally
Shock:
Careless Whisper;
Paul McAdam
Feels So Good;
Amy Christian
Adam Karbula:
Syncopated Love;
Dan Albro,
Drivin’ Me
Crazy; Kinsers & Amatos
Jean Rowe:
Buck Wild Stomp;
Kathy Brown
Clap Your Hands;
Vivienne Scott
Heaven In Your
Eyes; Ron Kline
Carole
Daugherty:
Just LeDoux It!;
Kathy Gurdjian
Hernando’s
Hideaway; Verdonk & Boogh
Bomshel Stomp;
Marshall & Hedges
Meltdown; Scott
Blevins
This kind of
spontaneous “no-risk” (to either the host or the attendees) workshop is a great idea, if you ever get the
chance to provide or attend one – take it!
From Sally:
And a special Thank
You to the instructors - Adam, Carole & Jean - they made the day exactly as I hoped it would be - casual, fun and lots
and lots of dancing. They all had a list of dances they were ready to teach and jumped right in when a couple unexpected
dances received votes. Although I was hesitant about the "tote" board it worked realllly well, giving us instructors
a guideline to go by.
Carole is right - this kind of workshop worked well for the dancers and the club!!!
And as an coordinator it was wonderfully easy. The only complaint I heard ALL day was that some of the dancers were
tired but didn't want to sit down and miss anything.
Thanks instructors and attendees!!!! Wonderful day!!!!!! Sally It's
Always Time To Dance!!!
Windy City Line Dance Mania 2005, Chicago IL
Thanks to Mark, Glen, Eve & all their staff
we were treated to EVERY ONE of the features we’ve come to enjoy at the MEGA events – tons of instructors
& lesson slots that had demos prior, close to constant open dancing, vendors galore, dinner/show, choreography competition,
plus great floors, sound, and temps. The Crowne Plaza
is perfect for dance events – ballroom layout, hotel rooms, staff, location – everything about this location is
excellent. There was something going on in the ballrooms virtually non-stop from Thursday evening through Sunday evening.
Every year it seems the hotel is perfectly fine with letting us take over - and we do all weekend :)
Just like in the past 2 years - we had a blast!
From morning till…morning ;)
DJ Louie – who never sleeps, worked the
room with a magic touch like always – no wonder he’s such an event favorite. NEW, which
will probably stand as a future event standard, was an option to get the step book on CD.
Great for instructors AND the paper reduction act ;) Contact Mark Consenza for ordering – how clever! This year also offered instructor review slots
and a dedicated “dances taught” ballroom - I think that was new???
There were tons of great dances from
all of the instructors, many of which we already know from the usual surveys/lists etc.
BIG on the floor, of those latest popular dances were: Meltdown - Blevins,
Looks So Good – Christian, Drivin’
Me Crazy – Kinsers & Amatos, Clouds in My Eyes – Robinson, Hot & Sweaty – Robinson &
Mundy, Syncopated Love – Albro,
Home – Cooper, Double J Switch
– Willis & Warren, Crabbuckit
– Murphy…along with most everything else we're doing currently plus a lot by Scott & Guyton like always J
There were probably over 100 dances taught
over the weekend – no way to see or do 'em all….but my picks for some of the newest up n comers from what I did
see are:
*Hernando’s
Hideaway, Verdonk - My personal fave of the entire weekend!!! Gimme an easy lil RPDs (Role playing dances) like this one anyday...where
ya can have fun - dance out of character, forget about your feet and play with the music. This dance prolly
won't have a middle ground - you'll either love it or you won't - I luv it!
*Cocoa
Puffs, Detweiller – Another fun EASY dance that works the music very well. Youngins
will take to it right away! You’ll hafta like the music – we
do - for now ;) it's done to My Humps by Black Eyed Peas.
You
Can Dance, Mirandas – Nice mainstream Michael Buble track – combined with a dance that most everyone can enjoy.
Bombshel
Stomp, Marshall & Hedges – Country dance track that looks yee-hawfully fun!
I
Think About You, Perry – Max’s latest showy type phrased dance
- not overly hard.
Irish
Waltz, and The Snake, Ward – Simon’s Waltzes just feel nice, this goes to a Celtic song, The Snake is a WC
with a different sound too – both would help balance an evening’s play list out with some of the non funky variety.
Venus,
and Evidence, Murphy – The first is a brand new hustle – not in the step book but sheets were available, don’t
forget to check it out. Evidence
is Gerard’s follow up to The Way, with a different feel about it.
Just
for Tonight, Harmon – A good do-able dance for most with room to enhance, plus this funky unique track by JC Chasez
seemed to grab folk’s attention – it did mine.
Careless
Whisper, McAdam – While solid intermediate, it’s a nice teachable NC2 that will be widely done.
The competition winners taught their dances
Sunday late afternoon. Again both are very doable for the majority. Congrats
to Johanna Barnes with That’s Life (C’est la Vie), and to Maurice Rowe with a versatile West Coast called After Party.
More good stuff for sure – I just missed
em…
Also offered were plenty of usable high
beginner dances taught by different instructors that had those slots – too many to list.
Windy City had the beginner
room slots before – this year it seemed to have even more of the “Headline” instructors teaching some
of the easier stuff – verra cool!
Thanks to everyone involved, especially all
the people I didn’t mention here – ya’ll made this a fantastic
weekend for dancers. See ya next year!

GREAT LAKES DANCE JAM, August 5-7, MORRICE MICHIGAN
Thanks to Scott & Debra Blevins, and Denise Stone for hosting a fantastic
dance
get-together in Morrice, Michigan this
past weekend!
Thanks also to everyone who helped out with, or who showed their support at the
event!
Lori Pung’s (from Spurs Too) review (copied below) covered all the basics
very well! Without duplicating over much – here’s my ramble
from a different angle…
WHAT IT WAS – WHAT IT IS ;)
As mentioned, this event was a summer mainstay for several years in our area.
Primarily with those dancers that have been around long enough to witness the
many changes, and the considerable evolution of line dance.
I’m thrilled to have had the chance to come back to it, as was everyone
else!
And knowing from previous years how good this event had been, us workshop junkies,
could already tell how much fun it was gonna be again this year, just by seeing the names on the flyer! We were rarin’ to go as soon as they announced it! Plus it attracted several 1st timers, and many new faces out too.
Going by their comments – they’re hooked – just like us J
As always like before, one of the nicest things about this event was, and still
is, it’s an awesome setting for an easy going, social gathering for dancers – combined with tons of great dancing!
Everyone was able to visit and mix n mangle with instructors and dancers alike.
In previous years, this might have been considered a progressive workshop.
Which is due to everyone who used to be involved in it. (Jo, Nancy, Scott &
Denise). Morrice, even back when, had always been known as an event to
provide an “edgier” dance format, especially when compared to the more typical fare of “Something for everyone” local events.
With everyone who was currently involved this year, it held true to that standard.
I’m so glad that aspect was unchanged!
The addition of Louie and Guyton fit that bill right nicely ;)
There was still something for everyone, especially during open dance time. We did a good bit of it all…oldies & classics, plus new stuff from the surveys
& lists – a nice mixture of everything, with the proper timing and dose.
One real positive aspect of a one room venue is that it puts everyone on the
same page, or same foot for 7,8, as it were, during open dancing. Everyone
got to practice the dances taught throughout the day and at night.
This was also a fantastic weekend for what I call the “MORE” dancers.
Louie did such a clever job of mixing it up so folks never sat for too long –
no matter their dancing preferences. Cheers to him for doing what he always does
best!!!
Every dance workshop is a good one in my opinion, whether it’s one of the
latest “Mega Events” or a smaller more localized production. They all have something very unique and distinct
to offer folks. It’s all dancing!
Comparing them is much like the old “apples and oranges” saying –
they’re just not the same – but equally delicious in their own right.
Scott & Co. will be making plans for next year…which may include venue
or other changes. For me and ALL the folks I talked to – it doesn’t
really matter where it’s held – we’ll be there!
Frankly – I dunno that I’d change that much….
For a complete teach list see Lori’s write up below.
But beyond all that, it felt just like a big ole family reunion – set to
music.
Lori Pung’s post to Carol Craven’s newsletter…
“August 5-7 was the Great Lakes Line Dance Jam in Morrice, Michigan.
This event is a reintroduction of a great dance event in Michigan that was formerly
known as Gone Country and was hosted by Nancy Manor and Jo Everhart. Unfortunately, this event went on hiatus for several
years after Nancy passed away, but Scott Blevins, along with Denise Stone, did a great job getting this event started again
as a tribute to Nancy and all those who remember her and we were thrilled that Jo came on Saturday to support the event and
visit with everyone. Those of us who dance in Michigan definitely miss seeing the two of them on the dance floor - they were
a lot of fun to watch and obviously both loved dancing!
Scott indicated that he intends to make this event become an annual summer event
again in Michigan, although he does plan on changing the location to be more conveniently located for those traveling in from
out of state for the weekend (he opted to use the original event location for this first time back). Hopefully next year this
event will be hosted in a hotel instead (we'd like to request air conditioning, Scott!). It will be a great addition to the
Midwest dance schedule as it is a great line dance event between the Ft. Wayne Showdown in March and Windy City in October.
This event got off to a great start with dancing Friday night with none other
than DJ Louie and continued with some great dances taught on Saturday. We had a catered lunch break on Saturday, which was
convenient and healthy, followed by more lessons on Saturday afternoon. Louie did a wonderful job ensuring that everyone had
plenty of chances to dance on Friday and Saturday night, really working with the crowd on hand to play what dances they knew
and get everybody up and dancing. And if we asked for a dance on Friday night, he kept track and played it on Saturday without
us having to request it again! We had plenty of opportunities throughout the day to dance as well - after each instructor
taught their lesson at the appointed hour, we typically had an additional half hour of open dancing before the next lesson.
There were lots of opportunities to dance all the dances taught this weekend as well to help us really remember what we learned!
We also had lots of dancers from Ontario, Michigan, Ohio and Illinois, as well as a handful from states that are farther away
- plenty of familiar faces for those of us who dance in this part of the country!
We had a great cast of instructors, some of our local favorites as well as some
known on the international scene.
Denise Stone taught "Frim Fram Dance" as well as assisted with organizing the
event.
Frank Cooper taught "Home" (which is heading up the World Dance survey) and he
taught the new dance that he and Carole Daugherty choreographed this weekend called "I Like to Move It".
Eve Yeaton taught "California Bounce" (the favorite choice from my group that
attended).
Guyton Mundy made his first official trip to the Midwest and celebrated his birthday
with us on Saturday. Be sure to ask him about his birthday present with pink feathers! Guyton taught "Playa", "Ah-Ah Ah",
"Podabe" and "I Played Chicken with the Train" as well as a bonus teach of "Ushered Through It". Hopefully, with lots of practice,
we'll be able to dance them like Guyton does - we have a lot of upper body work to do!!
Scott Blevins rounded out the teaching schedule with "No Regrets", "Replay" and
"Freaks to the Floor" (my personal favorite).
The instructors also did plenty of dancing which was fun to watch and were very
accessible to the dancers for pictures, chatting, etc. This event gave us ample opportunity for open dancing - more than
most events - and didn't result in brain overload on what was learned, given that there was only one workshop at a time. Overall
a great event and definitely one that you should make sure you get on your dance calendars for next summer.
SUBJECT: Recommended Dance
FROM: Cathy Jones
I noticed that the step sheet for this dance was in thursdays
newsletter so I wanted to share that this dance was taught at the
Linedance Jam in Michigan on the weekend. Its a cute little dance
that can be done basic or with your own styling. Recommend giving
it
a try. Congrats to Frank and Carol!
MOVE IT MOVE IT
Choreographed by:
If you haven't tried one of Frank's dances yet checkout "Home" its
a
beautiful nightclub two that you will just love.
On another note mark your calendar for next year's Linedance Jam
in
Michigan (congrats Scott and everyone else involved for a really
good event). This was an inexpensive and fun event with a great mix
of friendly people. I can't remember an event that I danced or
laughed more at.
